THE STORY
One Flower One Leaf
A floral arrangement with one flower and one leaf is attributed to the famous artist and zen philosopher Rikiu. He observed a fence covered with twining herbs and gathered one flower and one leaf, carefully grouping them together in a vase. On being asked why he adopted so humble a design, he replied that as it was impossible to rival nature it its magic of design, our artificial arrangements should be as simple and modest as possible.
One flower and one leaf are sufficient, he said, to call for admiration.
